The San Diego Nanotechnology Infrastructure (SDNI) contributes to the development of nanoscience, nanoengineering, and nanotechnology education by providing: Training of students (undergraduates and graduates), postdoctoral fellows, and more senior researchers, including engineers working in industry who are new to nanofabrication and characterization. Engagement of students and educators in community colleges and vocational schools, especially those serving large numbers of students who are members of underrepresented minority (URM) groups. Dissemination of new knowledge relevant to nanotechnology practitioners and to the general public.
The SDNI-REU offers a 10-week summer research experience for undergraduates at UC San Diego. Students are paired with leading researchers in science and engineering fields. Research areas include: NanoBioMedicine, NanoPhotonics, and NanoMagnetics. The goal is to prepare students for advanced studies in a Ph.D. program. Participants are paid a $4,500 stipend, housing, and up to $500 in travel expenses.
Students from bioengineering, material science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, photonics, engineering physics, bio-physics, biology, physics, computer science, and engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Be a U.S. citizen
Students from racial or ethnic minority groups, low-income family backgrounds, first generation U.S. citizens, community college and first generation college students are especially encouraged to apply.
Have a minimum overall 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Be entering their junior or senior year in college and not scheduled to graduate before September 2021.
